I am jealous of all the Elf-writers on tumblr who get questions for their characters.
Does anyone want to ask any character I have ever written any questions? I will try to answer both honestly and IC. Unless honesty would be very OOC.

Those ask-blogs? Heh, I have to say, I find most of them boring and not that IC. But it's all a matter of perspective, I guess.

But okay!

Dear Glorfindel,

First of all, love the hair. Have you ever thought about tying it up at all? What's your usual beauty routine?

Date: 2013-04-18 07:51 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] tehta.livejournal.com
Well, they're not IC for *my* takes on the characters. But mine would be, I hope. I am jealous because it's always fun letting my characters express themselves in an informal context.

Anyway, here we go:

Dear Reader,

Thank you! It is rather magnificent hair, I must admit. Even I am impressed by it. As for my beauty routine... Have you been talking to Salgant? I know he has all sorts of theories on the subject. Just for the record:

  • I do not dump lemon juice on my hair in the summer. The colour is natural.
  • I do not put my hair up in twists of paper (?) before going to bed. The subtle wave is natural, too.
  • I have never washed my head in moose urine. I mean, where would I even get such a substance?

Anyway, I am not sure I have a routine as such. I do use conditioning oils, and I comb my hair whenever it shows any signs of becoming tangled. (I know Idril brushes hers for 144 strokes every night, but I think that might be counterproductively hard on the hair-shaft.) And of course I do tie it up, for its own protection, when I am doing something hair-threatening, like leaning over a forge. Or when the weather warrants it. Windy weather is terrible, and as for extreme cold... this one time, on the Ice, about a quarter of my hair froze so thoroughly that it broke off at the height of my shoulder. Seriously! This is one of my most traumatic memories of all time.

Now please excuse me. I need a drink.

Dear Salgant,

What are, in your opinion, your most important responsibilities as head of the House of the Harp?

Date: 2013-04-18 10:31 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] tehta.livejournal.com
Dear Reader,

my single most important responsibility is to ensure that everyone is entertained. This is vital for the well-being of the city. After all, Elves do not live by Lembas alone! To that end, I organize festivals and spectacles, and I also hand out grants to artists to help them develop their acts. It is a very stressful and thankless task, partly because many artists are awful, conceited people with fragile egos, and partly because the viewing public at large is delusional as to what it likes. So, everyone is always clamouring for profound, experimental pieces, and complaining about all my sing-along comedies, quiz shows for morons, and multi-episode dramas about immoral aristocrats with great hair. But guess what they actually watch? Have you ever met anyone who has not seen "Manwe's Pants, Part XIV"?

I rest my case.

Salgant.

Really, dramas about immoral aristocrats with great hair are essential to a well-rounded life! If one adds sumptuous robes, the drama could be nothing less than a masterpiece.

I haven't seen "Manwe's Pants", but I only have basic cable.

I agree.

And don't worry, I haven't managed to see it either, yet (let's wait for the DVD version together).

I want to know if you think singing or playing the flute is your greatest talent.
If you could play another instrument, what would it be?
The real question, I have heard whispers. What is your relationship with Glorfindel? (Consider your answer confidential. I never betray a secret.)

Gah, this is difficult, because the answer to your second question might depend on the time period, of course. But this should apply to most of the timeline after F&F...

Dear Reader,

I am not sure I would refer to anything as "my greatest talent", but if I have to pick between those two skills, then I suppose I am comparatively better at singing, because it involves my voice, which is generally considered very good. I am also proficient with several other instruments, mostly assorted other woodwinds and some strings (but then, everyone plays the harp, surely?) and I know the basics of many more. I do enjoy trying new ones, although in general I tend to prefer things that are... less mechanically complex, and more portable? Closer to singing, I suppose.

As for Glorfindel, we are partners in many things. Most importantly, in our general plan to protect Middle-earth, and its inhabitants, from evil.

sincerely,

Ecthelion.

Which of them would you rather spend time with?

Dear Reader,

While I do find myself growing increasingly fond of Ecthelion as I get to know him better, Glorfindel is family, and has been my friend and supporter ever since I lost my mother. So I think I will always be closer to him. Also, I think he is more amusing, and unlikely to disapprove of anything. (Tuor is good friends with Ecthelion, though, so we can all spend time together quite happily!)

As for your first question... I must confess that I do not find either of our these Lords particularly attractive, in a personal sense. Actually, none of the Elves of Gondolin are really what I would call my type. I prefer a look that is more, well, Manly and rugged. In conclusion, I would like to say that I would prefer Glorfindel, but only if he grew a proper beard. (I cannot really imagine Ecthelion with one. Well, maybe a small, well-groomed, pointy one, but I think we can all agree that those are just awful. They are the sort of beards Maeglin might have preferred.)

I love it. I tend to think I would be more relaxed with Glorfindel myself. But Ecthelion would be a challenge I would gladly take on.

Dear Reader,

Kindly refrain from speaking of Ecthelion in such a disrespectful way. He is not a "challenge." He is a person. Who happens to be too busy to see you. For the next couple of centuries.

seriously,
Glorfindel

I do not think you should be very relaxed around Glorfindel, under these circumstances.

Dearest Beleg,

Am I to understand that Mandos releases his charges naked into Valinor? How scandalous! You are right of course, it was a metaphor, forgive me for not being more clear. I meant The Thing That Is Said About Mortal Men. Did you seek Tuor out? Was he receptive to your overtures?

Yours in puerilent interest.

Dear Reader,

There is nothing innately scandalous about nudity. (I suppose Saeros might disagree, but he was always very uptight and obsessed with "civilized behaviour". I suspect he was compensating for the fact that his father was a dung gatherer.) Anyway, yes, we are naked when we are reembodied: clothes are not part of the hroa, for us Elves, at least. Although, perhaps they are for Men? It might explain why Turin was so loath to change or wash his, and why Tuor goes swimming in a (rather stylish) pair of pants.

So, to answer your question, I have sought him out, but the answer to my questions eludes me. I suppose I could just ask Idril -- what do you think?
