tehta: (stained glass tree)

Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] moetushie. It's supposed to be "the latest 21 stories", but I don't actually have many more than that, so I am doing them all.

First, everything I have written since my return to fandom, excluding drabbles:

  1. "I cannot leave now!" Glorfindel stepped back from the window. "It has started snowing."

  2. Finwë entered the hut precisely at the appointed time, as always: his talent for keeping track of mundane detail truly was impressive.

  3. My Dearest Amarië, I wish, more than ever, that you were here beside me -- or, at least, that you could read and respond to these letters.

  4. “The things you talk me into...”

Then, WIPs I currently have open (which may or may not be finished.)

  1. “Mother! Mother! Where are you?”

  2. Finrod rather enjoyed being a model guest.

  3. When, in the four hundred and sixty fifth year after the rising of the Moon and the Sun, Amarië of the Vanyar felt her beloved die a violent death, she cursed the powers that allowed her people's gift of insight to work across the distance, the impassable seas, and even the mists of the Doom of the Noldor itself.

  4. It was only in the evening, as they rested after the hunt, that Beleg noticed Turin's usually withdrawn mood

  5. Glorfindel stood by the tunnel entrance and watched the people go in.

Finally, existing, posted stories.

  1. "But you cannot reject me!" the dangling actor said.

  2. The vanguard's runner took a moment to catch his breath.

  3. As I wander through the Halls of Mandos, I have nothing but my memories to amuse me.

  4. Ecthelion hated Glorfindel.

  5. This is the tale of Suethien, Luthien's twin sister, and Ereinion, the Son Of Kings.

  6. "Fëanaro! Come out of this forge at once!"

  7. When I was young, I liked to mimic voices.

  8. "I have worked it out," said Glorfindel.

  9. The checker-board lies flat and horizontal on the table.

  10. Salgant's throat was dry as an old musical scroll, his skin damp with sweat.

  11. "Oh, curse these mists!" Tuor swept an arm over the table, scattering maps and star charts.

  12. The peak towered over the rest of the mountain range, reaching far past the clouds, all the way into the sky.

  13. Ecthelion and Glorfindel were arguing.

  14. The hidden city of Gondolin dazzled the eye.

  15. "…continue meeting in the spirit of deep but appropriate friendship."

I actually don't hate most of them, even if they aren't all huge attention-grabbers. I think most of them work for setting up a story, anyway. There is a lot of dialogue, which is fine considering how it puts one right in the center of things, some close POV feelings and observations, a few scene-establishing shots... I guess thirteen is weak and not really necessary.

I must admit I still like "Ecthelion hated Glorfindel" a lot, and in a way, it may be what makes "Ecthelion and Glorfindel were arguing" work, because it seems like half an echo of the establishing sentence of their first story. And I think the one from the enforced method acting fic is a stroke of genius.

Well, maybe. But the argument becomes obvious in the next line, and several of my G/E scenes could start with "E & G were arguing." The "'I have worked it out,' said Glorfindel" story, for one.

Perhaps you should turn it into a running gag, then. "Ecthelion and Glorfindel were arguing again/as usual/under Glorfindel's famous table/in the sewers/immediately before the start of the traditional Gates-of-Summer-silence/in the Halls of Mandos/with renewed vigor after being reembodied/while chasing the Witch-king after the Battle of Fornost/silently during the Council of Elrond/on the eve of Arwen's wedding". Endless possibilities!

I think this will sort of happen whether I will it or not...

Now I want to read them (again, in the case of the ones that I have read before).

I was going to say I really liked 13. It is unexpected, unpretentious, makes one feel immediately ready to listen. Who doesn't want to ease drop on a great argument between two of our favorite characters? It would not pass a couple of the tests presented in most conventional wisdom for opening lines. That's part of what makes it good. It is not a cliche (for sure!).

But E & G arguing is almost a cliche, among my writing. They argue ALL THE TIME. Mostly good-naturedly, but still.

I also like "Ecthelion hated Glorfindel" as an opening line. And #13. (It seems that whenever you criticize your work all you get are arguments.)

I'm going to go back and re-read the dangling actor fic.

You like it because you like hate!

And ooh, people arguing with me! It's like my readers are Ecthelion to my Glorfindel, or something.

I wish this was Facebook (I don't really, but) just so I could click "like" on this comment. If there was a "seconded!" button I would click that here. Brilliant summation.

The Beleg WIP is actually lying around online somewhere, almost done. And the Amarie one is sitting on my harddrive, almost done. I just need a moment of peace to work on them...
